Background Information about the Department
Pharmaceutical Microbiology plays roles in controlling and assuring the quality of pharmaceuticals. Notwithstanding the fact that contamination of pharmaceuticals by microorganisms can lead to their spoilage and infection of the end users, microbial cells play important roles in most natural biological processes, and are harnessed as sources of new antibiotics and green biotechnologies.
However, following the recommendation of National Universities Commission (NUC) and Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN) at their separate visitations that Department of Pharmaceutical Microbiology be carved out from the then Department of Pharmaceutics, and realizing the fact that the roles played by Pharmaceutical Microbiology in pharmacy practice cannot be underestimated, the Council of Obafemi Awolowo University (formerly University of Ife) at her meeting of 6th October, 2021 approved the creation of the Department of Pharmaceutical Microbiology from the then Department of Pharmaceutics.
Since its inception, the Department has had two Heads of Department with Dr. E. O. Akinkunmi as the pioneer Head of Department (Jan, 2022 – July 31st, 2023).
